Qualified Teacher Status
Full Form of QTS
What is QTS?
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is a professional designation awarded to individuals who meet the required standards to teach in state-maintained schools in England and Wales. In the Indian context, QTS is increasingly relevant for Indian educators seeking international teaching opportunities, particularly in the UK and countries that recognise the qualification. The status is obtained through completion of an initial teacher training programme, assessment against the Teachers' Standards, and often includes skills tests in literacy and numeracy. Indian teachers with a B.Ed or equivalent degree can also apply for QTS through the Department for Education's overseas recognition process, which evaluates their qualifications and experience. QTS is not a degree but a certification of teaching competence, and it is used by schools abroad as a benchmark of quality. While QTS itself is not required to teach in Indian schools, it enhances the global mobility of Indian educators and adds professional credibility. For exams like the TET or CTET in India, QTS knowledge is not directly tested, but understanding international teaching standards can broaden career prospects for aspiring teachers.
