What is QTP?

Quick Test Professional (QTP) is a commercial automated testing tool developed by Mercury Interactive, later acquired by Hewlett-Packard (HP) and now marketed as Micro Focus Unified Functional Testing (UFT). QTP is designed for functional and regression testing of software applications through a graphical user interface. It uses a keyword-driven approach and supports scripting via VBScript. In the Indian IT services industry, QTP has been widely adopted by companies such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and HCL for automating test cases in large-scale enterprise projects, particularly for ERP, CRM, and web applications. It is commonly used in software development lifecycles where quality assurance teams need to execute repetitive tests across multiple builds. QTP integrates with HP Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) for test management and reporting. Although Selenium and open-source tools have gained popularity, QTP remains relevant in legacy systems and certification exams like ISTQB and HP’s own QTP certification. Indian test automation professionals often list QTP experience on resumes to demonstrate proficiency in commercial testing tools. The tool is typically used in corporate environments, offshore development centers, and during product release cycles.
