Quality Point Index
Full Form of QPI
What is QPI?
QPI stands for Quality Point Index, a grading metric used by several Indian universities and colleges to evaluate a student's academic performance over a semester or a specific term. It is similar to the Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned in a semester by the total number of credits attempted. Each course grade is assigned a specific quality point value (e.g., A+ = 10, A = 9, etc.), and the QPI provides a weighted average that reflects both the grades achieved and the credit weight of each course. This system is widely used in engineering and professional degree programs across India, especially in institutions affiliated with universities like Mumbai University, where the QPI is recorded on transcripts and plays a role in academic standing, eligibility for honors, and placement criteria. For competitive exams and higher education admissions, a strong QPI is often considered a marker of consistent academic performance. Understanding QPI helps students track their progress and set targets for improvement in subsequent semesters. It is distinct from the cumulative index (CGPA) as it is term-specific, while CGPA aggregates all semesters.
