Quality of Service
Full Form of QOS
What is QOS?
Quality of Service (QoS) is a set of technologies and mechanisms used to manage network resources by prioritizing specific types of data traffic over others. In the context of India, QoS plays a critical role in ensuring reliable internet connectivity, especially with the rapid expansion of broadband and 4G/5G networks. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) mandates QoS benchmarks for internet service providers (ISPs) to maintain minimum standards in terms of latency, jitter, packet loss, and throughput. QoS is widely applied in Voice over IP (VoIP), video streaming, online gaming, and enterprise applications where consistent performance is essential. It is also used in government networks for e-governance services, telemedicine, and distance education to ensure seamless delivery. In competitive exams like GATE (Computer Science) or NTA UGC NET, QoS concepts are tested under computer networks topics. With the rise of OTT platforms and smart cities, QoS has become a regulatory and technical priority in India to bridge the digital divide and ensure equitable access. Without effective QoS, congestion during peak hours can degrade user experience, making it a key parameter for ISP performance audits.
