Introduced in 2011, the QFI route allows foreign investors to purchase shares of Indian companies without needing to register as a Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI). This initiative aimed to broaden India's investor base, deepen the capital markets, and reduce dependency on domestic institutional investors. QFIs were initially allowed to invest in equities through SEBI-registered Qualified Depository Participants (QDPs).
