Peptide YY
Full Form of PYY
What is PYY?
Peptide YY (PYY) is a 36-amino acid peptide hormone secreted by L-cells in the ileum and colon in response to food consumption, particularly fats and proteins. It acts as a key regulator of appetite by binding to Y2 receptors in the hypothalamus, inducing satiety and reducing food intake. In the Indian context, PYY has gained attention due to rising rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Researchers study how traditional Indian diets—rich in spices, fiber, and plant-based proteins—influence PYY secretion compared to Western diets. In clinical practice, PYY levels are measured to assess gastrointestinal disorders like dumping syndrome or to evaluate appetite control in bariatric surgery patients. It is also used in pharmacological studies aiming to develop anti-obesity drugs. For students, PYY is a core topic in physiology and biochemistry for NEET PG, AIIMS, and nursing exams. Understanding its mechanism helps in grasping the broader endocrine regulation of energy balance. The hormone was first isolated in 1980 and continues to be a focus of metabolic research globally, including at Indian institutions like AIIMS and CCMB.
