Primary Years Programme
Full Form of PYP
What is PYP?
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an internationally recognized curriculum developed by the International Baccalaureate (IB) for students aged 3 to 12. It focuses on the holistic development of children through inquiry-based learning, encouraging them to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners. In India, the PYP is implemented in a growing number of IB World Schools, particularly in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, catering to both expatriate and Indian families seeking a global education. The programme emphasizes transdisciplinary themes such as 'Who We Are' and 'Sharing the Planet', integrating subjects like language, mathematics, science, and social studies into real-world contexts. It is used in classrooms from pre-primary to Grade 5, often replacing traditional national curricula. For students aiming for higher IB programmes like the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP), the PYP serves as a foundational stage. Though not directly an exam-focused syllabus, its project-based assessment and portfolio approach prepare students for critical thinking and international-mindedness, which are valued in competitive exams like the SAT and university applications abroad.
