Police Verification Officer
Full Form of PVO
What is PVO?
A Police Verification Officer (PVO) is a law enforcement official deputed by the local police station to conduct physical and documentary verification of an individual's residence, identity, and character for official purposes like passport issuance, driving license, or government job applications. In India, the PVO plays a critical role in the police verification process mandated by the Ministry of External Affairs and state transport departments. The officer visits the applicant's home, interviews neighbours, checks address proof, and records any criminal antecedents before submitting a report. This procedure helps prevent identity fraud and ensures due diligence in issuing sensitive documents. PVOs are usually senior constables or head constables trained in verification protocols. Their work is particularly important in rural and semi-urban areas where digital systems are less robust. Though not a standalone exam topic, questions on passport verification or police clearance often reference the PVO's role in general knowledge and current affairs sections of competitive exams like SSC and UPSC.
