Personal Unblocking Key
Full Form of PUK
What is PUK?
PUK, or Personal Unblocking Key, is a security code used to unlock a SIM card that has been blocked due to multiple incorrect PIN entries. In India, where mobile penetration is extremely high, PUK codes are critical for maintaining access to telecom services. Every SIM card issued by Indian telecom operators such as Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL comes with a unique PUK code, either printed on the SIM card packaging or available through the provider's customer support. When a user enters the wrong PIN three times consecutively, the SIM card locks, and only entering the correct PUK can restore functionality. PUK codes are typically 8-digit numbers. If the PUK is entered incorrectly ten times, the SIM becomes permanently blocked, requiring a replacement. In India, PUK codes are often requested in customer care interactions, and mobile network providers allow retrieval via IVR, SMS, or online portals. While PUK is not directly examined in most academic curricula, it is a standard concept in telecom and mobile device troubleshooting. Understanding PUK is essential for everyday mobile users and for professionals in customer service roles within the telecom sector. The code enhances mobile security by preventing unauthorized access to the SIM, thereby protecting personal data and call usage.
