Product Quality Index
Full Form of PQI
What is PQI?
The Product Quality Index (PQI) is a composite metric used to evaluate the overall quality of a product by aggregating multiple quality attributes such as durability, performance, safety, and customer satisfaction. In India, PQI is employed across manufacturing sectors—automotive, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and FMCG—to benchmark products against industry standards and regulatory norms like those set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It is often derived from internal testing data, customer feedback, and compliance reports, enabling organizations to track quality improvements over time. PQI plays a crucial role in export-oriented industries where international buyers demand consistent quality. For students pursuing MBA or engineering degrees, understanding PQI is relevant for courses in operations management, total quality management (TQM), and lean manufacturing. It is also used by government agencies like the National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) to assess vendor performance. Exams such as GATE, CAT, and UGC NET may include questions on quality indices, making PQI a useful concept to grasp.
