What is PPL?

It is the sole organization in India authorised to issue licences for the public performance of sound recordings. When a hotel, restaurant, mall, radio station, or any public venue plays recorded music, they must obtain a licence from PPL and pay royalties. These royalties are then distributed to the record labels and music producers who own the rights to the songs. PPL plays a crucial role in protecting intellectual property rights in the Indian music industry, ensuring that creators are compensated for the commercial use of their work. It operates alongside other copyright societies like the Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) for lyrics and musical works.
