What is PNT?
PNT stands for Positioning, Navigation, and Timing. It refers to the combination of three critical capabilities that enable a user to know their exact location (positioning), determine the best route from one point to another (navigation), and synchronize activities with precise time references (timing). In India, PNT systems are the backbone of modern infrastructure, powering everything from GPS-based apps on smartphones to high-precision agriculture, banking transactions, power grid synchronization, and defence operations. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) operates its own regional PNT system called NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), which provides accurate positioning over India and surrounding regions. PNT is also crucial for air traffic control, maritime navigation, disaster management, and telecommunications. The term is widely used in scientific literature, defence briefings, and government policy documents on space technology and digital infrastructure. For competitive exams like UPSC and GATE, understanding PNT and its applications in navigation satellite systems is essential, especially in topics related to science and technology, space policy, and national security.
