Price Look-Up
Full Form of PLU
What is PLU?
PLU stands for Price Look-Up, a numeric code used in retail to identify produce items like fruits, vegetables, and herbs. In India, PLU codes are commonly used in modern supermarkets, hypermarkets, and organized retail chains to streamline billing and inventory management. These codes are typically four or five digits long, printed on small stickers attached to individual items or on price tags. When a cashier scans or enters the PLU code at the point of sale, the system automatically retrieves the item name, price per unit, and other details, eliminating the need for manual lookup. This system ensures faster checkout, reduces pricing errors, and helps retailers track stock levels and sales patterns. PLU codes are standardized globally by the International Federation for Produce Standards (IFPS), and Indian retailers often adopt the same scheme for imported and domestic produce. In competitive exams like IBPS, SBI Clerk, or NABARD, questions on retail technology and supply chain management may include PLU codes as part of modern trade practices. The use of PLU codes is especially prevalent in tier-1 and tier-2 Indian cities where organized retail is growing rapidly. Understanding PLU codes is useful for students of retail management, economics, and commerce.
