Project Implementation Unit
Full Form of PIU
What is PIU?
A Project Implementation Unit (PIU) is a dedicated team or body established within a government department or agency to oversee the execution of a specific development project or scheme. In India, PIUs are commonly formed for large-scale infrastructure, rural development, urban renewal, and social welfare programs funded by central or state governments or international agencies. The unit is responsible for planning, coordinating, monitoring, and reporting the project's progress, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards. PIUs serve as the bridge between policy makers, funding agencies, contractors, and beneficiaries. For instance, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) sets up PIUs at state and district levels to manage road construction. Similarly, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) uses PIUs to implement housing projects. The term is frequently encountered in government tenders, project reports, and civil services exams such as UPSC and state PCS, where candidates are expected to understand institutional mechanisms for project delivery.
