Personally Identifiable Information
Full Form of PII
What is PII?
Personally Identifiable Information (PII) refers to any data that can be used to identify, contact, or locate an individual, either alone or combined with other sources. In India, PII is central to data privacy regulations under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the proposed Digital Personal Data Protection Act. It includes names, Aadhaar numbers, PAN, phone numbers, email addresses, biometric data, and even IP addresses. PII is widely used across sectors—banking for KYC, telecom for SIM registration, healthcare for patient records, and e-commerce for transactions. With India’s massive digital adoption, protecting PII has become a critical concern for businesses and government agencies. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) mandates strict safeguards for Aadhaar-related PII. Students preparing for exams like UPSC, IBPS, or SEBI must understand PII as part of cybersecurity and IT governance topics. Mismanagement of PII can lead to identity theft, financial fraud, and legal penalties under the IT Act. As India develops its data protection framework, awareness of PII is essential for compliance officers, IT professionals, and citizens alike.
