What is PDT?
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a medical treatment that uses a photosensitizing agent and a specific wavelength of light to destroy abnormal cells, such as cancer cells, or to treat certain skin conditions. The process involves administering a photosensitizer drug that accumulates in target cells, which is then activated by light exposure, producing reactive oxygen species that damage the cells. In India, PDT is increasingly used in dermatology for conditions like actinic keratosis, acne, and certain skin cancers, as well as in oncology for superficial tumors. It is also employed in ophthalmology for age-related macular degeneration. The procedure is typically performed in hospitals and specialized clinics, often on an outpatient basis. PDT offers a minimally invasive alternative to surgery and chemotherapy. For medical students, understanding PDT is relevant for entrance exams like NEET PG and AIIMS, where questions on treatment modalities appear. Despite its benefits, adoption in India faces challenges due to high equipment costs and limited awareness among practitioners. However, research institutions like AIIMS and Tata Memorial Hospital are advancing its use. Overall, PDT represents a promising, targeted therapy with growing applications in Indian healthcare.
