Personal Computer eXchange
Full Form of PCX
What is PCX?
PCX stands for Personal Computer eXchange, a raster image file format originally developed by ZSoft Corporation for its PC Paintbrush software. It was one of the first widely adopted image formats on IBM-compatible personal computers during the 1980s and 1990s. In India, PCX format was commonly used in early desktop publishing, scanning software, and legacy graphic design applications. Although largely replaced by modern formats like JPEG and PNG, PCX is still encountered in archival systems, vintage software emulation, and certain technical documentation. The format supports indexed color, grayscale, and 24-bit true color images, and uses simple run-length encoding (RLE) compression for reducing file size. In Indian computer science and information technology curricula, PCX is studied as part of image processing fundamentals and file format history. Understanding PCX helps students appreciate the evolution of digital imaging and the constraints of early hardware. While not essential for current professional practice, familiarity with PCX may appear in questions about legacy systems or format conversion in niche fields like digital forensics or museum digitization.
