What is PBY?

The Consolidated PBY Catalina is an American flying boat designed for maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and transport duties. First introduced in 1936, it became one of the most widely used seaplanes during World War II. In the Indian context, the Indian Air Force (IAF) operated PBY Catalinas from the early 1940s until the early 1970s. These aircraft were extensively used for coastal reconnaissance over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, as well as for casualty evacuation and logistical support in remote island territories. The PBY Catalina played a critical role in India's maritime surveillance efforts during the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistani wars, providing long-range patrol capabilities before dedicated maritime patrol aircraft like the Lockheed Super Constellation and later the IL-38 were introduced. Though retired from active service, the Catalina remains a symbol of India's early naval aviation heritage. Its robust design and ability to operate from water made it invaluable for operations in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
