Performance Based Assessment
Full Form of PBA
What is PBA?
Performance Based Assessment (PBA) is an evaluation approach that measures a student's ability to apply knowledge and skills in real-world or simulated tasks rather than relying solely on traditional written exams. In India, PBA is increasingly adopted by progressive schools, vocational training institutes, and some higher education programs to assess critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and hands-on competencies. For example, students might be asked to complete a science experiment, create a business plan, or deliver a presentation as part of their assessment. The National Education Policy 2020 encourages competency-based learning, making PBA relevant for both formative and summative evaluations. It is commonly used in CBSE-affiliated schools for subjects like Mathematics, Science, and Social Science, as well as in skill-based courses under the National Skills Qualification Framework. PBA helps overcome rote memorization and provides a more holistic picture of learner readiness. For competitive exams, PBA is less common but appears in some professional certification programs. Understanding PBA is crucial for students and educators aiming to align with modern pedagogical trends and exam reforms.
