Oxidized Hemoglobin
Full Form of OXH
What is OXH?
Oxidized Hemoglobin (OXH) is a form of hemoglobin in which the iron atom within the heme group is in the ferric (Fe³⁺) state instead of the normal ferrous (Fe²⁺) state, rendering it unable to bind oxygen. In the Indian healthcare system, OXH levels are measured during blood gas analysis and oxidative stress assessments, particularly in patients with conditions like methemoglobinemia, sepsis, or exposure to certain toxins. The test is commonly performed in clinical biochemistry labs, hospitals, and during pre-employment health checks in industries dealing with chemicals. OXH is also a parameter studied in medical entrance exams like NEET PG and AIIMS INI CET, where questions focus on its physiological impact and clinical significance. Understanding OXH helps doctors distinguish hypoxemia caused by abnormal hemoglobin versus lung dysfunction. While trace amounts of OXH exist normally, elevated levels require immediate intervention, often with methylene blue therapy. Its relevance crosses into both diagnostic medicine and toxicology, making it a key concept for Indian MBBS and nursing students.

The arterial blood gas report showed an OXH level of 12%, indicating mild methemoglobinemia due to nitrate exposure.
