Oxacillin
Full Form of OXA
What is OXA?
Oxacillin (OXA) is a beta-lactam antibiotic belonging to the penicillinase-resistant penicillin group. It is primarily used to treat infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, especially those that produce penicillinase (an enzyme that breaks down ordinary penicillin). Oxacillin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death. In India, oxacillin is a critical drug in hospital settings for managing skin and soft tissue infections, pneumonia, and bloodstream infections. It is often employed when methicillin-sensitive Staph aureus (MSSA) is confirmed. The drug is available in injectable and oral forms, though the injectable route is more common in severe cases. Oxacillin is also used in surgical prophylaxis to prevent staph infections. For medical students preparing for NEET PG or AIIMS PG exams, knowing the spectrum, resistance patterns (especially MRSA vs MSSA), and dosing of oxacillin is essential. The emergence of MRSA has reduced oxacillin's utility, but it remains a first-line agent for MSSA. Oxacillin is also used in veterinary medicine in India. Its use is monitored due to potential adverse effects like interstitial nephritis and hepatotoxicity. Overall, OXA is a cornerstone antibiotic in combating staphylococcal infections in India, though judicious prescribing is encouraged to prevent resistance.
