Overseas Workers' Zone
Full Form of OWZ
What is OWZ?
The Overseas Workers' Zone (OWZ) is a designated administrative and welfare area established by the Government of India to support the large diaspora of Indian workers employed abroad, particularly in Gulf countries. These zones function as nodal centers under the Ministry of External Affairs, providing pre-departure training, legal assistance, financial counseling, and emergency repatriation services. They are primarily located at major Indian airports and in key overseas destination cities where Indian labor is concentrated. The concept emerged from the need to streamline the emigration process and protect vulnerable workers from exploitation. OWZs work in close coordination with Indian embassies and state-level welfare boards like NORKA. They offer a physical and virtual space for workers to register their grievances, access insurance schemes, and receive cultural orientation. In India's competitive exams for civil services and diplomatic posts, questions about the emigration policy, labor welfare schemes, and the role of OWZ in reducing irregular migration often appear. The recent expansion of OWZs to include digital portals reflects India's commitment to the safety and well-being of its overseas workforce.
