Opioid Use Disorder
Full Form of OUD
What is OUD?
Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a chronic medical condition characterized by a problematic pattern of opioid use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress. It involves a compulsive urge to use opioids, loss of control over consumption, and withdrawal symptoms upon cessation. In India, OUD has emerged as a major public health challenge, particularly in states like Punjab, Haryana, and the northeastern regions, where heroin and pharmaceutical opioids such as codeine and tramadol are widely abused. The condition is diagnosed using criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and is treated through a combination of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone, along with behavioral counseling and psychosocial support. The Indian government has established de-addiction centers and introduced naloxone distribution programs to reduce overdose deaths. OUD is often comorbid with other mental health disorders, HIV, and hepatitis C. It is highly relevant for medical exams such as NEET PG, AIIMS, and psychiatric nursing assessments, where understanding its diagnostic criteria and treatment protocols is essential.
