Officer of the Watch
Full Form of OOW
What is OOW?
Officer of the Watch (OOW) is a licensed professional responsible for the safe navigation and operation of a ship during a designated watch period. In India, the OOW certification is issued by the Directorate General of Shipping under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, following standards set by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). This role is pivotal in the Merchant Navy, where OOWs manage bridge watch, monitor radar and communication equipment, ensure collision avoidance, and handle emergencies. The term is used extensively in maritime academies, shipping companies, and port authorities across India, especially during pre-sea training and onboard assessments. For students aspiring to join the Merchant Navy, clearing the OOW examination conducted by the Indian Maritime University or affiliated institutes is a critical step. Exams cover subjects like navigation, meteorology, ship stability, and maritime law. The demand for skilled OOWs remains high in India due to the country's large seafarer workforce and growing shipping trade.
