Optical Network Unit
Full Form of ONU
What is ONU?
An Optical Network Unit, commonly abbreviated as ONU, is a device used in fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) and other passive optical network (PON) architectures to terminate an optical fibre connection at the customer's premises. It functions as the endpoint equipment that converts optical signals transmitted over fibre optic cables into electrical signals that can be used by routers, telephones, and computers. In India, ONUs have become increasingly important due to the rapid expansion of broadband infrastructure under initiatives like BharatNet, the Digital India programme, and the aggressive fibre rollout by operators such as Jio, Airtel, BSNL, and Tata Play Fiber. ONUs are deployed at homes, offices, and multi-dwelling units to deliver high-speed internet, IPTV, and voice services. They support standards like GPON and XGS-PON, enabling gigabit-class connectivity. The device is essential for last-mile fibre connectivity in both urban apartments and rural village networks. For students pursuing electronics, telecommunication, or computer networking courses, understanding ONU architecture and its role within the broader Optical Line Terminal (OLT) network is a frequent topic in technical interviews, competitive exams, and certification programmes.
