Osteonecrosis of the Jaw
Full Form of ONJ
What is ONJ?
Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ) is a serious medical condition characterized by the death of jawbone tissue due to reduced blood supply. It is most commonly associated with the use of bisphosphonate drugs—often prescribed for osteoporosis, multiple myeloma, or metastatic bone cancers—and with antiresorptive therapies. In India, ONJ is increasingly recognized in dental and oncology clinics, particularly among elderly patients and those undergoing cancer treatment. The condition typically presents with exposed bone in the mouth, pain, swelling, infection, and difficulty chewing. ONJ can develop spontaneously or after dental procedures such as extractions or implant placements. Diagnosis involves clinical examination and imaging, while management includes conservative care, antibiotics, oral rinses, and sometimes surgical debridement. Awareness of ONJ is growing among Indian dental surgeons and oncologists, leading to preventive protocols before starting bone-modifying therapies. Although rare, the condition is significant in India due to the rising prevalence of osteoporosis and cancer, making it a relevant topic for medical exams such as NEET PG and AIIMS postgraduate entrance tests. Prompt recognition and multidisciplinary care are crucial to improve patient outcomes.
