What is OJY?

Odisha Jyoti Yojana, commonly abbreviated as OJY, is a flagship rural electrification scheme introduced by the Government of Odisha to provide free electricity connections to households in remote and underserved areas of the state. The scheme specifically targets Below Poverty Line families and other economically weaker sections who have remained without power despite years of grid expansion. Under OJY, eligible beneficiaries receive a free electrical connection, internal wiring, and a set of energy-efficient LED bulbs at no cost, with the entire expense borne by the state government. The programme is implemented through the four distribution companies operating in Odisha, namely CESU, NESCO, WESCO, and SOUTHCO, in close coordination with local panchayats. Applications can be submitted online through the official portal or offline at designated common service centres and electrical section offices. Since its launch, the scheme has transformed the lives of lakhs of rural families by enabling access to lighting, fans, mobile charging, and small appliances. For aspirants preparing for Odisha state competitive exams conducted by OSSC and OPSC, knowledge of OJY forms an important part of state general awareness and current affairs.
