On-the-Job Learning
Full Form of OJL
What is OJL?
On-the-Job Learning (OJL) is a structured training methodology where individuals acquire practical skills and knowledge directly in a real work environment, rather than through traditional classroom instruction. In India, OJL is a core component of the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and various vocational training programs under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. It is widely used in manufacturing, IT, hospitality, and healthcare sectors to bridge the gap between theoretical education and industry requirements. Trainees or apprentices spend a significant portion of their program performing actual tasks under the guidance of experienced mentors, earning a stipend while learning. This approach is especially prominent in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and corporate apprenticeship programs. OJL is also referenced in exam contexts for students pursuing courses under the National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF), where it contributes to competency-based assessment. By integrating OJL, India aims to enhance employability and reduce the skill mismatch in its workforce, aligning with the government’s Skill India mission.
