Overseas Investment Zone
Full Form of OIZ
What is OIZ?
Overseas Investment Zone (OIZ) refers to a designated area within India that offers special incentives, simplified regulations, and infrastructure to attract foreign capital and encourage overseas Indian investments. Modelled after Special Economic Zones (SEZs), OIZs are tailored to channel funds from Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and global institutional investors into priority sectors like manufacturing, technology, and services. The concept emerged from India’s effort to boost economic growth by leveraging its diaspora network and global capital. OIZs are typically established near ports or major industrial corridors to facilitate export-oriented production and job creation. They operate under a streamlined regulatory framework with benefits such as tax holidays, customs duty exemptions, single-window clearance, and relaxed labour laws. While not as widely implemented as SEZs, OIZs represent a policy tool to deepen India’s integration into global value chains. In competitive exams like UPSC or RBI Grade B, understanding OIZs can help answer questions on India’s foreign investment policy, industrial development strategies, and the role of NRIs in the economy. The term is used in government reports, business news, and economic discussions, particularly when analyzing India’s efforts to attract overseas capital.
