Organization of Islamic Cooperation
Full Form of OIC
What is OIC?
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an intergovernmental organization comprising 57 member states, with a permanent delegation to the United Nations. It is the second largest intergovernmental organization after the UN, representing the collective voice of the Muslim world. Established in 1969 following the Al-Aqsa Mosque fire, the OIC aims to safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony. In the Indian context, India is not a member, but the OIC often discusses matters related to Kashmir and the rights of Indian Muslims, making it relevant in diplomatic discourse. The organization works on political, economic, cultural, and social issues, and holds summits and ministerial meetings annually. It is frequently referenced in news reports and policy discussions concerning Islamic solidarity and global affairs. For students of international relations or competitive exams like UPSC, understanding the OIC's stance on regional conflicts, Palestine, and its role in the UN is important for contemporary world affairs questions.
