Oxygen Debt
Full Form of ODY
What is ODY?
Oxygen debt, also known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), refers to the amount of oxygen required to restore the body to its resting state after physical exertion. During intense exercise, muscles consume oxygen faster than the body can supply it, leading to an oxygen deficit. After exercise, the body continues to consume extra oxygen to metabolize lactate, replenish ATP and phosphocreatine stores, and restore normal body temperature and heart rate. In India, this concept is widely taught in physiology, sports science, and physical education curricula, especially for students preparing for medical and fitness-related competitive exams like NEET or UGC NET. It is also used in athletic training programs across Indian sports academies to optimize recovery and performance. Understanding oxygen debt helps athletes design effective interval training and recovery protocols. For competitive exams, questions often ask about its relationship with anaerobic glycolysis and lactic acid buildup. The term is most commonly encountered in classroom lectures, textbooks, and fitness certification courses.
