Optical Distribution Network
Full Form of ODN
What is ODN?
An Optical Distribution Network (ODN) is the fiber-optic infrastructure that connects a central office or service provider's optical line terminal (OLT) to end-user premises in a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) or fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) network. It consists of passive components such as optical fibers, splitters, connectors, and cabinets that distribute optical signals without active electronic amplification. In India, ODN plays a crucial role in expanding high-speed broadband access under initiatives like BharatNet and the National Optical Fibre Network, which aim to connect rural and urban areas. Telecom operators like BSNL, Reliance Jio, and Airtel deploy ODN to deliver gigabit-capable internet services. The technology is widely used in GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) architectures, enabling cost-effective and scalable last-mile connectivity. For students of electronics, telecommunications, and computer science, understanding ODN is essential for examining India's digital infrastructure growth, and it frequently appears in questions about broadband technologies in competitive exams like GATE, IES, and state engineering exams.
