Open Data Kit
Full Form of ODK
What is ODK?
Open Data Kit (ODK) is a free and open-source set of tools designed for mobile data collection and management. It enables users to create forms, collect data offline on Android devices, and aggregate responses on a server. In India, ODK has become a backbone for field research by NGOs, government agencies, and academic institutions conducting surveys, censuses, and health monitoring programs—especially in remote and rural areas where internet connectivity is poor. Its offline-first architecture allows enumerators to gather information without network access and sync later. The platform includes ODK Collect (an Android app for data entry), ODK Aggregate (a cloud-based storage), and ODK Central (a modern server). Organizations like the Public Health Foundation of India and state health departments use ODK for tracking disease outbreaks and immunization drives. For exam aspirants in public health or data science, understanding ODK’s role in digital data collection is relevant for national-level surveys like NFHS and for questions on ICT in governance.
