Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Full Form of ODD
What is ODD?
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a childhood behavioral disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of angry, irritable mood, argumentative and defiant behavior, and vindictiveness toward authority figures. In India, ODD is increasingly recognized in clinical psychology and pediatric psychiatry, though it remains underdiagnosed due to limited mental health awareness. It typically manifests in preschool or early school years and is commonly identified by parents, teachers, or school counselors when a child consistently refuses to follow rules, argues excessively, or deliberately annoys others. The disorder is distinct from typical developmental defiance as it causes significant impairment in social, academic, and family functioning. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial; treatment often involves parent management training (PMT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for the child, and sometimes medication for co-occurring conditions like ADHD. ODD is frequently co-morbid with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD). In Indian educational contexts, ODD can affect classroom behavior and learning, making teacher training in behavioral management important. For students of psychology or medicine appearing for exams like NEET PG or UGC NET, understanding ODD diagnostic criteria (DSM-5 or ICD-11) and its differentiation from conduct disorder is essential.
