On-Board Diagnostics
Full Form of OBD
What is OBD?
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) is an automotive electronic system that provides self-diagnosis and reporting capabilities for a vehicle's engine and other subsystems. In India, OBD has become increasingly important with the adoption of Bharat Stage (BS) emission norms, particularly BS-VI. The system continuously monitors engine performance, emissions control components, and other critical parameters. When a fault is detected, the OBD system generates a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC), which can be read using a scanner by a mechanic or vehicle owner. OBD is used in modern cars, two-wheelers, and commercial vehicles across India. It helps in early detection of issues, reduces emissions, and improves fuel efficiency. For students and professionals in automotive engineering or mechanics, understanding OBD is crucial for exams like GATE, SSC JE, and ITI certifications. The system also plays a key role in vehicle environmental compliance and roadworthiness checks. With the government's focus on reducing vehicular pollution, OBD technology is now standard in all new vehicles sold in India. It also aids in fleet management and preventive maintenance, saving costs for vehicle owners and operators.
