Net Zero Initiative
Full Form of NZI
What is NZI?
A Net Zero Initiative (NZI) refers to any comprehensive plan or policy framework aimed at achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, typically by balancing emitted carbon with equivalent carbon removal or offsetting. In the Indian context, the term gained prominence after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India's target of net-zero emissions by 2070 at the COP26 summit. NZI encompasses strategies across sectors like energy, transport, industry, and agriculture, including scaling up renewable energy capacity, promoting electric vehicles, enhancing forest cover, and adopting carbon capture technologies. The initiative is central to India's climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and is discussed in policy documents, corporate sustainability reports, and government schemes such as the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and the State Action Plans on Climate Change (SAPCC). It is used by environmental agencies, think tanks, and businesses setting science-based targets. For competitive exams like UPSC or State PCS, understanding NZI helps answer questions on climate change governance, India's international obligations, and the concept of 'just transition'. The term is also frequently cited in discussions on green finance and carbon markets, reflecting a global shift towards sustainable development.
