What is NWR?
North Western Railway (NWR) is one of the 18 railway zones of Indian Railways, headquartered in Jaipur, Rajasthan. It was formed on October 1, 2002, by carving out divisions from the Northern Railway and Western Railway zones. NWR operates across the states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, Punjab, and the Union Territory of Delhi. The zone comprises four main divisions: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Ajmer. NWR plays a vital role in connecting the desert and semi-desert regions of western India with major urban centers, facilitating both passenger and freight traffic. Key routes include Delhi–Jaipur–Ahmedabad, Jodhpur–Bikaner, and Ajmer–Udaipur. The zone is known for its iconic trains like the Palace on Wheels luxury tourist train and the Shatabdi Express linking Delhi with Ajmer. NWR also manages significant freight movement for minerals, cement, and agricultural produce from Rajasthan. In examinations like RRB NTPC and Railway Recruitment exams, questions about NWR often appear regarding its headquarters, year of formation, and constituent divisions. The zone has been instrumental in improving rail connectivity to pilgrimage destinations such as Ajmer Sharif, Pushkar, and Nathdwara.
