National Water Grid
Full Form of NWG
What is NWG?
The National Water Grid (NWG) is a proposed interlinking of rivers project in India aimed at addressing regional water imbalances by transferring surplus water from water-rich areas to water-deficit regions. Conceived under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the NWG envisions connecting major Himalayan and peninsular rivers through a network of canals, reservoirs, and pipelines. The project is intended to mitigate droughts, reduce flood damage, and boost irrigation and drinking water availability across the country. It has been discussed in various parliamentary committees and policy documents but remains in the planning and feasibility stage due to ecological, financial, and interstate political challenges. The NWG is a key topic in Indian civil services examinations, particularly in geography and governance sections, where questions often focus on its objectives, environmental impact, and implementation hurdles. The concept gained prominence through the National Perspective Plan for Water Resources Development formulated in 1980 and continues to be a subject of debate among experts.
