Night Vision Goggles
Full Form of NVG
What is NVG?
Night Vision Goggles (NVG) are optical devices that enable clear vision in low-light or complete darkness by amplifying ambient light such as moonlight or starlight. They use image intensifier tubes to convert photons into electrons, which are then accelerated and displayed on a phosphor screen to produce a visible green-tinted image. In the Indian context, NVGs are extensively used by the Indian Army, paramilitary forces, and special operations units like the Para Commandos and the National Security Guard (NSG) for night patrols, surveillance, and tactical missions along the borders, particularly in high-altitude regions like Siachen and Kashmir. They are also employed by the Indian Air Force for night-time helicopter and transport operations, as well as by police forces during anti-insurgency operations. The technology has evolved from bulky first-generation devices to lightweight, high-resolution fourth-generation systems with improved range and durability. India has also indigenously developed NVG systems through agencies like DRDO to reduce dependency on foreign imports. Knowledge of NVG is relevant for defence exams such as CDS, AFCAT, and SSB interviews, where candidates may be quizzed on basic optoelectronic devices used in modern warfare.
