Narmada Valley Authority
Full Form of NVA
What is NVA?
The Narmada Valley Authority (NVA) is a statutory body established by the Government of India to oversee the planning, implementation, and regulation of water resource projects in the Narmada river basin. Founded in 1980 under the Narmada Valley Development Authority Act, it coordinates between the four riparian states—Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan—to manage the construction of dams, canals, and hydroelectric facilities. The NVA plays a central role in executing the Narmada Valley Development Plan, which includes the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) and the Narmada Sagar Project, ensuring equitable water sharing, environmental safeguards, and rehabilitation of displaced communities. Its decisions impact irrigation for millions of hectares and drinking water supply for drought-prone districts. In Indian context, the NVA is frequently referenced in civil engineering, environmental impact assessments, and inter-state water dispute resolutions. For government job aspirants, understanding the NVA's structure and key projects is essential for UPSC Civil Services, state engineering services (like GATE), and water resource management exams. The authority also collaborates with central bodies such as the Central Water Commission (CWC) and the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
