National Textile Corporation
Full Form of NTC
What is NTC?
The National Textile Corporation (NTC) is a public sector undertaking (PSU) owned by the Government of India and operating under the administrative control of the Ministry of Textiles. Established in 1968, NTC was created to manage and revive sick textile mills that were taken over by the government, particularly in the wake of the textile industry crisis in the 1960s and 1970s. The corporation plays a vital role in sustaining employment, preserving traditional weaving skills, and ensuring the production of cotton and blended fabrics, including uniforms for defence and paramilitary forces. NTC mills are primarily located in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Over the years, NTC has undergone restructuring, including closure of unviable mills and modernization of key units. Today, it focuses on operational efficiency, brand revival (such as the 'Mafatlal' and 'Bombay Dyeing' brands under its fold), and export of value-added textiles. For students appearing in UPSC, SSC, or textile engineering exams, knowledge of NTC is relevant under the Indian economy and public sector management sections. The corporation remains a key stakeholder in India's textile policy and employment generation in the organized textile sector.
