What is NRY?

Nehru Rozgar Yojana (NRY) is a centrally sponsored urban employment scheme launched by the Government of India in 1989. It was designed to provide employment opportunities to the urban poor, particularly in towns and cities with a population of 1 lakh or more. The scheme comprised three sub-schemes: Scheme of Urban Micro Enterprises (SUME) for self-employment, Scheme of Urban Wage Employment (SUWE) for wage employment through public works, and Scheme of Housing and Shelter for the Urban Poor (SUHS). NRY aimed to reduce urban poverty by generating income and creating community assets. It was implemented through Urban Local Bodies and state governments. The scheme was later merged into the Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY) in 1997. NRY remains relevant for civil services examinations (especially UPSC Prelims and Mains) as an example of early urban poverty alleviation efforts. It highlights the evolution of employment policies in India, from targeted schemes to integrated approaches like DAY-NULM. The acronym is frequently referenced in Indian administrative and economic history contexts.
