National Research System
Full Form of NRS
What is NRS?
The National Research System (NRS) in India refers to the network of research institutions and laboratories coordinated under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). It encompasses over 100 ICAR institutes, 71 agricultural universities, and multiple research centres spread across the country. The NRS is primarily responsible for conducting cutting-edge research in agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and allied sciences to enhance productivity, sustainability, and food security. It plays a pivotal role in developing high-yielding crop varieties, innovative farming techniques, and climate-resilient practices. The system is used extensively by scientists, students, and extension workers for research, training, and policy formulation. In academic contexts, the NRS is a key topic in agriculture and rural development examinations, including ICAR JRF/SRF, UPSC Civil Services (Agriculture optional), and state agricultural university entrance tests. The NRS also collaborates with international organisations to address global challenges like climate change and malnutrition. Its outputs directly impact millions of farmers through technology dissemination and advisory services.
