What is NRL?
Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) is a public sector oil refining company headquartered in Numaligarh, Golaghat district, Assam. Established as a subsidiary of Oil India Limited (OIL), NRL was commissioned in 1999 to process crude oil from the fields of eastern Assam. The refinery plays a strategic role in India’s energy security by producing petroleum products like liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), motor spirit, high-speed diesel, and aviation turbine fuel, primarily catering to the northeastern states. NRL operates with a capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum and is undergoing expansion to 9 MMTPA to meet rising regional demand. It also emphasizes sustainable practices, including a green hydrogen plant and biofuels production. NRL is frequently referenced in Indian competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state civil services, especially in questions related to public sector undertakings in the oil and gas industry.
