What is NPC?
The National Productivity Council (NPC) is an autonomous body under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Established in 1958, it is a national-level organization that promotes productivity, quality, and competitiveness across all sectors of the Indian economy. NPC works closely with industry, government, academia, and labour organizations to enhance productivity through training, consultancy, research, and advisory services. It is a key player in the country’s drive towards ‘Ease of Doing Business’ and the ‘Make in India’ initiative. NPC operates through a network of regional offices and industry-specific centres across India. It also serves as the national partner for the Asian Productivity Organization (APO). In the context of competitive examinations such as UPSC or State PCS, NPC may be referenced in questions related to economic reforms, industrial policy, and productivity-linked incentive schemes. Its annual reports and productivity awards are significant markers of organizational efficiency in India.
