Non-Performing Assets Unit
Full Form of NPAU
What is NPAU?
An NPAU (Non-Performing Assets Unit) is a specialized department within Indian banks and financial institutions tasked with the management and recovery of non-performing assets, commonly known as bad loans. When a borrower fails to repay principal or interest for a period of 90 days or more, the loan is classified as an NPA. The NPAU takes over the recovery process to minimize losses and protect the bank's balance sheet. In India, where rising NPAs have been a major concern for public sector banks, NPAUs play a critical role in implementing recovery mechanisms such as restructuring, asset seizure under the SARFAESI Act, and referring cases to debt recovery tribunals or the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). These units work closely with legal teams, recovery agents, and valuation experts to resolve stressed assets. NPAUs are also responsible for maintaining asset quality metrics and reporting to the Reserve Bank of India. For banking aspirants preparing for exams like IBPS PO, SBI PO, and RBI Grade B, understanding NPAU functions and related NPA recovery tools is essential as they feature regularly in financial awareness sections. The performance of NPAUs directly impacts a bank's profitability and capital adequacy, making them a key focus area in Indian banking reform.
