Notice of Death
Full Form of NOD
What is NOD?
Notice of Death (NOD) is a formal document submitted to an insurance company to inform them about the death of a policyholder. In India, this notification is the first step in initiating a life insurance claim, commonly used by both public sector corporations like Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and private insurers. The NOD must be filed by the nominee or legal heir, accompanied by essential documents such as the death certificate, policy document, and identity proof. It triggers the claim settlement process, which may include verification of the policy terms, assessment of cause of death, and eventual disbursement of the sum assured. The NOD is typically submitted within 30 days of the insured's death, though many insurers allow late submissions with a reasonable explanation. This term is frequently encountered in insurance awareness sections of competitive exams like IRDA Assistant Manager, banking probationary officer (PO) exams, and General Insurance Corporation exams. Understanding the NOD process is crucial for Indian policyholders to ensure timely claim settlement and avoid procedural delays.
