National Nutrition Mission
Full Form of NNM
What is NNM?
The National Nutrition Mission (NNM) is a flagship program of the Government of India, launched in 2018 under the Ministry of Women and Child Development. It aims to address the country's high levels of malnutrition, stunting, underweight, and anemia among children, adolescents, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. The NNM implements a targeted approach through the POSHAN Abhiyaan framework, focusing on improving nutritional outcomes by leveraging technology, converging with other schemes like ICDS and PMMVY, and mobilizing community participation. It sets clear targets to reduce stunting by 2% per annum, reduce low birth weight by 2% per annum, and reduce anemia by 3% per annum. The mission operates across all states and union territories, with special focus on 236 high-burden districts. It uses real-time monitoring via a common application software (CAS) to track progress. In the Indian administrative context, NNM is frequently referenced in policy documents, budget allocations, and state-level implementation reports. For competitive exams such as UPSC, state PCS, and CDS, knowledge of NNM is essential under health and social issues topics. The mission represents a significant step toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 on zero hunger and improved nutrition in India.
