National Monetisation Pipeline
Full Form of NMP
What is NMP?
The National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India, announced in the Union Budget 2021-22, to monetise underutilised or underperforming public sector assets across various infrastructure sectors. The NMP aims to unlock value from government-owned assets such as highways, railway stations, power transmission lines, telecom towers, and airports by leasing or awarding them to private players on a concession basis. This generates revenue for the government while leveraging private sector efficiency. The pipeline outlines a four-year roadmap (2021-25) with an estimated monetisation target of ₹6 lakh crore. It is implemented through central ministries and public sector undertakings, with monitoring by the NITI Aayog. The NMP is commonly referenced in policy discussions, budget analyses, and infrastructure development debates. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, RBI Grade B, SEBI, and banking exams, understanding the NMP is essential for questions on government schemes, fiscal policy, and infrastructure financing. It also ties into broader topics such as asset recycling, public-private partnerships, and the National Infrastructure Pipeline.
