What is NKP?
Naval Kishore Press (NKP) was a pioneering Indian publishing house founded in 1858 in Lucknow by Munshi Naval Kishore. It became one of the most influential printing establishments in 19th- and early 20th-century India, specialising in lithographic printing. NKP produced a vast array of works in Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Hindi, and Sanskrit, including classical Islamic texts, poetry, religious literature, and educational materials. The press played a crucial role in the dissemination of knowledge during the Indian literary renaissance and helped standardise printed Urdu script. It also published newspapers and periodicals that shaped public opinion. NKP's legacy endures in rare book collections and its role in preserving South Asian heritage. For competitive exams like UPSC, knowledge of NKP appears in modern Indian history, particularly under the themes of social and cultural change, or in questions about the development of print culture in India.
